These are not a good argument.

Hellcat, 4C, and F-Type are.
But the cheap, affordable, stripped down and mechanical sports car is a dying breed.

Clarkson is also a fat fucking loud mouthed pube headed buffoon.
That said, I genuinely do enjoy him on Top Gear.

Hellcat is a sportscar??? Seriously? That's the worst argument here. And before anyone calls me out on a dislike of the Hellcat, I would say the same about the Camaro or the Mustang.

Reports of the sports car's death have been greatly exaggerated.

It's a high performance car that compromises practicality for fun.
Now, in the stricter terms of 'sports car' in that it's a car that is designed for going around corners fun, not fast, with a smaller engine, then none of these except for maybe the 4C count. But I don't think that's what jumps in most people's head when they hear 'sports car'.
Most people think "sports car" means 2 doors, power, and low fuel economy. Which, for the most part, is correct. We're just a little more pedantic.

Yup, you said it, the affordable sports car is what's dying...and remember Clarkson is British, living in a country that was once teeming with small, affordable sports cars.
I wouldn't call the Hellcat a sports car as such, fun car, yes, but not a sports car.

They released the Toyobaru, but "It needs a turbo and all the weight that comes with it!" or "It needs to hit 60 in at least 5 seconds to be a proper sports car!" or "Why did they put these cheap ass tires on here, they are no good for track day, yo!". They could release a mechanical, stripped down sports car that is affordable, but it would fall to the same crowd that thinks the Toyobaru is too slow, so they won't.

A Hellcat is very much a sportscar.

True, I get pretty serious when we toss around the term sports car. I feel like they really are a nearly a dying breed and in my mind hot hatches come closer to traditional sports cars than all these GT machines. I agree the 4c comes the closest but I don't even count it.
I think real sports cars should have a chassis outrunning its motor. I think they should be lightweight and stripped down.
This is the closest I think of real sports cars that are actually still manufactured. Followed next by the Miata and BRZ. They are good sports cars but they are just a bit more refined than I want for a good sports car.
I would love to see an automaker come out with a three box coupe stripped down sports car. Like if they offered a work truck trim for the purists/cheapskates and then offered more well equipped trims for all the posers hairdressers guys wanting a more refined sports car.
Something like one of these for $16k-$20k with cloth seats, manual windows and locks, no ac or stereo, and a tiny peppy three or four cylinder with a 5 speed stick. Bigger engines and fancier trannnies and all the bells and whistles on more expensive trims. Wouldn't something like that work and sell a lot?

Why not?

Except that Clarkson's evidence of a dying breed was this

Well in that case Clarkson's full of it.
